The Southern Maryland Technology Commercialization Pilot Project (SMTCPP) is an initiative funded by the Department of Defense Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA) and lead by the Maryland Department of Commerce in conjunction with the local governments and economic developers in the Southern Maryland region, which is composed of Calvert, Charles and St. Mary‘s Counties. The Project includes evaluating the commercial potential of existing patents from Southern Maryland installations, developing a step-by-step technology transfer methodology, assessing the market readiness of select technologies, and identifying contractors with the ability to commercialize identified patents. Other tasks include supporting technology innovation and entrepreneurship with small business assistance and technology incubation for small to mid-sized technology firms, and the development of a targeted marketing analysis to design a plan to draw technology innovators and start-ups to the region.
This website provides a database of DoD-assigned Intellectual Property (IP) developed at the four DoD installations that have a presence in the Southern Maryland region: Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWC-AD), Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head (NSWC IHEODTD), Naval Research Lab (NRL), and NSWC Dahlgren.
These patents are easily identifiable and searchable to entrepreneurs and businesses interested in commercializing the identified technologies. All of the patent information provided is in the public domain and can be accessed directly via the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
